The National Academy of Science an Engineering represents the interests of the German scientific and technology communities, at home and abroad. As a working academy, acatech supports policy-makers and society by providing qualified technical evaluations and forward-looking recommendations. German Research Foundation is the main patron organisation for research in Germany, and as the largest third-party fund supporter of research at universities, an important mainstay for basic research. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is the leading organisation for applied research in Europe. 57 institutes belong to it in the Federal Republic of Germany, and there are also branches in the USA, Asia and the Middle East. Its customers are the industry and service sectors, as well as public administration.

The Stifterverband is an alliance of more than 3,000 companies, company associations and individuals to further the fields of science, research and education. The association sees itself as a think tank. It highlights structural problems, develops solutions and provides start-up financing.

The Helmholtz Association is a community of 17 scientific-technical and biological-medical research centres and the largest science organisation in Germany. Helmholtz Centres perform research in strategic programmes in six core fields: Energy, Earth and Environment, Health, Key Technologies, Structure of Matter, Aeronautics, Space and TransportHelmholtz Association.

The German Rectors’ Conference is the voice of the universities in politics and the general public. Almost all public and officially recognised universities have joined the HRK and work together to develop points of view for the advancement of research and theory, further education, the transfer of knowledge and technology, international cooperation and self-government.

The Leibniz Association comprises 87 research institutions. Their orientation ranges from natural, engineering and environmental sciences to economics, social and space sciences to the humanities. Other focal points are scientific services and the transfer of knowledge, for example through policy advising or the eight research museums.

The 80 Max Planck Institutes nationwide conduct basic research in the natural and social sciences and in humanities. The Max Planck Society follows new and particularly innovative research directions and works in close collaboration with universities and research institutes in Germany and other countries.

The German Council of Science and Humanities provides advice on state and federal levels on issues regarding science policies. Its members - scientists, members of parliament, and public personalities - are contracted by the state and federal goverments to compile recommendations for the development of science, research and universities.

The main role of the German Federation of Industrial Research Associations is the support of applied research and development to the benefit of small and medium-sized enterprises. The AiF is active at the interface between economy, science and the state and distributes about 250 million Euros of public funding yearly, mostly from the budget of the Federal Ministry of Economy.

With around 300 members, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities is an association of scientists crossing borders between both states and disciplines. Its headquarter is located in Berlin. Research into cultural heritage and questions of the future and dialogue with the public are its main objectives.

The German Federation of Technical and Scientific organisations is the roof organisation of some 45 non-profit associations within the field of science and technology. It represents the interests of engineers in relation to science, economics, society, politics, and administration.

The Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors encourages discourse on scientific, technical and medical themes. Schoolchildren, students and interested lay-people are free to become members. Among its goals is to impart the fascination and relevance of scientific findings to the public.

In addition to these members Wissenschaft im Dialog wants to attract more partner organisations to put science communication on a broad base. So for the Klaus Tschira Stiftung and the Robert-Bosch Stiftung became mulit-annual strategic partners.
The Robert Bosch Stiftung is one of the major German foundations associated with a private company. Its program areas focus on healt, science, international relations, education and culture.
